The Sprudge Report - Welcome To The Build-Outs of Coffee!
And a little bit more time to nominate someone for the Sprudge Twenty
Sprudge Twenty nominations extended!
We heard your cries—a maelstrom, a primal wail, a veritable tidal wave of earnest queries, each more beseeching than the last. “Can we just have a little more time to submit a nomination for the Sprudge Twenty? Please? If you may??” Of course! Nominations have just been extended for the Sprudge Twenty through June 13th, 2025. That means it’s not too late to nominate someone in your community for this remarkable community project.
Record revenue for Ethiopian coffee
It’s a good time to be a coffee producer in Ethiopia. Over the last 10 months, coffee exports from Ethiopia have earned $1.87 billion, exceeding the country’s target by 142%. And with the threat of American tariffs having a greater effect on other producing countries, the revenue stream looks to stay strong.
Coffee before bed is not good for you sleep
Drinking coffee makes you alert, which is all you really need to know in order to understand why you probably shouldn’t drink any before bed. If you actually want to sleep anyway. But new research has confirmed it, in case you needed a little extra scientific rigor to bolster your belief.
A cold brew coffee kombucha
A kombucha company walks into an art gallery, and they make a cold brew kombucha. MOMO Kombucha has teamed up with London’s Tate Galleries, who also have their own coffee line, for an all-new cold brew coffee kombucha. It’s coffee and art in a bottle, with a little prebiotics for good measure.
Source: A Green Coffee Buying Panel Podcast
At SCA Expo in Houston, Cafe Imports hosted a live podcast taping, featuring other specialty coffee importers all discussing the modern complexities of the coffee trade. Now, part one of that podcast, Source: A Green Coffee Buying Panel Podcast, has been released, and part two will come out next week.
Coffee helps women age better
Regular coffee consumption has already been linked to better aging, but a new study examines its effects on women specifically. Using a 30-year study with nearly 50,000 participants, the researchers found that daily coffee consumption had significant positive benefits for women as they progressed to into old age.
We’re buildin’
Welcome to the 2025 Build-Outs of Coffee! We’re kicking off the first week with two exciting new cafes. First up is a gorgeous new cafe from Arkansas’s Onyx Coffee Lab, who trade exclusively in gorgeous cafes. And in Barcelona, Osom Nou brings a restrained elegance to their build. If these two new cafes are any indication, it’s going to be the best year of Builds yet.
Kopi Luwak on the Sprudgecast?!
It seems unthinkable, but Kopi Luwak is the feature of the latest Coffee Sprudgecast. But hear me out. It’s not traditional Kopi Luwak, which involves harvesting coffee cherries from the poop of civets (to say nothing of the rampant animal cruelty involved in the modern version of the practice). This Kopi Luwak uses no animals at all, but uses a process that imitates what coffee undergoes when ingested by the small cats.
