The Sprudge Report - The News Fit to Brew
All this week's coffee news from Apples Stores to Zero-proof cocktails.
The color of coffee
Drinking coffee is a multi-sensory extravaganza. More than just taste and small, visual cues play a big part in how we experience our favorite brew. And color is a major factor. From green coffee to to the final cup, color is used to assess a coffee’s quality, and sometimes, it can even change how it is perceived. Editor at Large Jenn Chen takes a deep dive in the sensory interminglings of coffee and color.
A coffee tour of Tokyo’s Kiyosumi-Shirakawa neighborhood
Tokyo is one of the world’s great coffee destinations, and trying to make a coffee guide for the entire city is a fool’s errand. So this week, we took a jaunt around a single neighborhood, Kiyosumi-Shirakawa. The self-proclaimed “coffee town” has played a big role in the modern popularity of coffee in Tokyo, and today there is no shortage of great places worth checking out.
A zero-proof coffee tipple in the heart of Las Vegas
In the City That Never Sleeps, coffee is imperative. And so the folks at the Encore Resort by Wynn put together a special little coffee cocktail, sans alcohol. The Solar Power is a cold-brew based zero-spirit coffee cocktail in the style of the espresso martini. It’s a drink befitting a fancy vacation to Vegas.
Thieves break into Seattle Coffee Gear to get to the Apple Store
Late Sunday night, April 2nd, thieves pried open the doors of the Seattle Coffee Gear in Lynnwood, Washington, a northern suburb of Seattle. There, they made their way to the bathroom, where they cut a 2ft x 1.5ft hole in the wall, gaining access to the adjacent Apple Store and making off with over 450 iPhones. The value of their stolen haul is estimated to be around $500,000.

New gear
It’s been quite a week for the coffee gear-inclined. First we brought news of Kruve’s new milk pitcher, featuring three different spouts designed for different types of latte art pours. Then, AeroPress chummed the waters for what will be a big 2023 for them with a new Flow Control Filter Cap, which gives users more control over total brew time and a wider range of grind sizes to use with the brand’s iconic brewer. Not to be outdone, Etkin took to Kickstarter for a smaller version of their Sprudgie Award-nominated flat-bottom dripper
