South Indian filter kaapi

The history of coffee in India has deep roots. From production to consumption to unique expressions of cafe culture, India is bursting with coffee narratives, but there’s one particular story from India that’s only just starting to be told outside the subcontinent: South Indian filter kaapi.

In a recent feature for Sprudge Special Projects, Namisha Parthasarathy explores the history and ubiquity of this brewing method for coffee lovers in India’s south, and the challenges, limitations, and opportunities the method presents to a new generation of specialty coffee lovers.

Going gaga for gear

Making coffee at home just keeps getting better and better. This week, we found out that the iconic coffeemaker manufacturer Technivorm has announced the latest iteration of their Moccamaster grinder line, the KM5. For the home cappuccino-inclined, the NanoFoamer Pro on Kickstarter offers an espresso machine-less solution to cafe-quality latte art. Meanwhile, La Marzocco has teamed up with Artpresso for an entire line of espresso-making accessories.

Wasps!

These nasty little stingers may have finally made themselves useful. Hawaii might soon be releasing a certain species of wasp, P. Coffea, to get rid of the coffee borer beetle infestation on coffee farms once and for all.

New cafes

We headed back to Pittsburgh to check in with longstanding coffee institution Constellation Coffee, now celebrating a decade in PGH. And in a first for Sprudge, we’re visiting Newfoundland for Bannerman Brewing Co, a coffee shop and beer bar in St. John’s.

Coffee is art

In Copenhagen, Denmark, “Italian Passion: The Art of Espresso” is a free art exhibit celebrating the cultural significance and design in espresso making over the years. “The exhibition tells, through a historical overview, how espresso has become the Italian lifestyle recognized all over the world.”

The US Coffee Championships are set!

Last weekend, the US coffee world turned their attention to Denver for the second Qualifying Event. After an electrifying two days of coffee competition across six disciplines, the second half of the US Coffee Championships field has been determined. They will be heading to Portland in April to join those who earned their way to the national stage via the first Qualifying Event that took place in Baltimore earlier this year.

Not to be outdone, the World Coffee Championships also announced the slate of competitions heading to World of Coffee in Athens for 2023. The World Barista Championship, World Brewers Cup, World Cup Tasters, and World Cezve/Ibrik Championships will all crown a new champion in Greece in June.
