The Sprudge Report - Hot Coffee Summer
Two of Sprudge's annual summer feature series are heating up!
The BOOCs are open
It’s hard to believe, but it’s that time of year already. The Build-Outs of Coffee, Sprudge’s annual series highlight new and soon-to-be-open cafes the world over, is just around the corner. And we’re accepting submissions right this very moment! We’ve featured hundreds upon hundreds of cafes since the Build-Outs first began all the way back in 2012, and we can’t wait for that trend to continue here in 2023. Follow this link to submit your new coffee project for consideration.
El Niño and coffee production
The weather phenomenon known as El Niño is expected to hit land later this year, affecting multiple coffee producing countries in the Pacific Ocean. But not all countries, or varieties, are going to be impacted the same. Experts say that robusta stands to suffer the brunt of El Niño, while Arabica may avoid much disruption. And the reasons have more to do with geography than variety.
Jimmy Cold Brew Buckets & the Miami Heat Exchange
We love seeing what hobbies coffee people have outside of coffee. Big Face Coffee owner Jimmy Butler, it turns out, is pretty good at sports and is leading his team to the championship round in his basketball league. We here at Sprudge would like to wish Big Face Coffee’s Jimmy Butler all the luck in the world as he chases down a basketball trophy. We’re rooting for you, Jimmy.
Tasting Table is wrong about Americanos
We read a lot of bad articles about coffee, but generally choose not to report on them. Some are so wrong, though, that we feel compelled to set the record straight. So when Tasting Table declared there was “only one type of coffee roast for truly vibrant Americanos,” we felt the need to correct the many, many factual errors.
Mall coffee but make it good
The mall food court is such a place of vital importance to the adolescent American. But not because the food is good. In Miami, though, you can at least score a delicious cup of coffee thanks to Naughty Coffee. As part of our Sprudge Maps Spotlight feature series, we speak with the owners of Naughty Coffee about their VW van cafes parked in multiple malls across Miami.
New origin alert!
You’ve had coffee from Papua New Guinea, but what about West Papua? While PNG inhabits the eastern part of the island of New Guinea, West Papua—technically a province of Indonesia—is one the westernmost part of the island. And the first specialty-grade coffee from West Papua has come to market in America. Teaming up with Cafe Imports, Roadmap Coffeeworks has released a wash processed coffee from the Wamena region, and it’s available for purchase on their website now!
The Sprudge Twenty
The Sprudge Twenty, our annual feature series honoring the movers and shakers across the coffee industry, kicked off this week with not one but two interviews. We spoke with Søren Stiller of Stiller’s Coffee in Aarhaus, Denmark as well as Maya Crowley of Uncommon Coffee in Essex, Vermont. Read on to find out where the industry is now and where it’s headed, as told by some of its best and brightest minds.
