Going Deep in Marseille

We’re hopping an international flight, with a minimal layover and cheeky connecting shuttle, all the way to Marseille, France to check out the latest location of Deep Coffee. Sprudge readers may recall Deep’s absolutely stunning refurbished newsstand cafe, featured in a previous edition of our Build Outs of Coffee series. Their new, more traditional brick-and-mortar is itself a sight to behold and has us looking up flights.

Go Fund Bean’s mentorship program is back!

Are you new to the coffee industry or looking to join a different sector? Are you a coffee veteran wanting to share your wealth of knowledge with the next generation? If either of these are you, Go Fund Bean wants to hear from you. Bean for Bean, their mentorship program, is back for 2023, and they are accepting applications for both mentors and mentees.

What’s the best drinking temperature for coffee?

Temperature is a big topic in coffee, but normally it’s about either brewing or roasting. And these are not the temperatures you want touching your tongue (unless you are into second and third degree burns). So we asked the experts, what exactly is the best serving temperature for your coffee?

Coffee drinks to buzz about

This week we take a deep dive on the extensive and inventive drinks program at Atlanta’s Gilly Brew Bar. Founders Daniel Brown and Nephthaly Leonidas are pushing quality and innovation across an ever-changing range of premium coffee “elixirs” with ingredients like dried herbs, bitters, and aromatics.

And if you are looking for something a little boozier, there’s a brand new cold brew hard cider. It may sound weird but hear me out: it might be really good? The folks at Locust Cider certainly think so anyway. They teamed up with Cutters Point Coffee for a limited release Cold Brew Hard Cider for a coffee-forward quaff with notes of toasted mallow, baker’s chocolate, amaretto, and light spice, balanced with hazelnut and vanilla. It’s out there, but I’m willing to get out there to give it a shot.

Sourced: The Coffee Podcast by Royal Coffee returns

Season two of Royal’s Sourced: The Coffee Podcast is off to a rollicking start with two new episodes, one on Brazil and one on Colombia. And if that’s not enough, they have a pretty stellar deal going on their Crown Jewels box sets. Read all about it on Sprudge.

The sharks bite big on Kahawa 1893

Last week, Margaret Nyamumbo appeared on Shark Tank to seek investment for her coffee brand Kahawa 1893. To say it was a successful appearance would be an understatement. Nyamumbo had multiple offers and her pick of investors, and she walked away with a pretty penny to help grow her company.

The history of coffee and religion

When you think about coffee and religion, perhaps the first thing that comes to mind is some sort of Bible study group taking over a corner at your favorite cafe. But the history of the pairing goes back centuries and exists outside the Judeo-Christian framework. For Sprudge Special Projects, contributor Valorie Clark explores the-sometimes mystic history of coffee and religion.
