But first, a new coffee book!
After two years of work, Sprudge is proud to announce But First, Coffee: A Guide to Brewing from the Kitchen to the Bar, a brand new book from co-founders Jordan Michelman and Zachary Carlsen. For their second book, Michelman and Carlsen move away from the more theoretical in their first outing, The New Rules of Coffee, and focuses on the practice, including brew guides and recipes for incorporating coffee into your food and beverage game. But First, Coffee will be out October 10th wherever you buy books, but you can pre-order your copy today!
An interview with Getchusomegear’s Chris McCauley
For this week’s Sprudge Twenty interview, we got the chance to chat with Chris McCauley, the driving force behind Getchusomegear, the organization getting coffee equipment to new coffee professionals, particularly those with a marginalized identity. McCauley is not one to pull punches, and this interview is no different.
#WhereSheIs
Teaming up with Peet’s Coffee, Grounds for Health has launched a summer-long campaign called #WhereSheIs that will provide cervical cancer self-test kits to women in coffee producing communities. With the campaign, they hope to raise $100,000, equalling 2,700 kits to be handed out across Ethiopia and Kenya.
A coffee tour of Aberdeen
Aberdeen may not necessarily be the first place that comes to mind when you think of coffee scenes in Scotland. But the country’s third largest—and very far north—city has seen a growth in popularity for specialty coffee over the past few years, and it would be fair to say that now, coffee in Aberdeen is thriving. To learn more, Fionn Pooler takes us on a coffee tour of his hometown.
Amsterdam coffeeshops may be coming to California
When is a coffee shop not a coffee shop? When it’s a coffeeshop, by which we mean they sell marijuana. Amsterdam’s famed coffeeshops, dens of decriminalized cannabis and coffee of questionable quality, have found a proponent in California, Assemblymember Matt Haney of San Francisco, who has proposed a new bill to let dispensaries diversify what they sell in hopes of helping the struggling industry.
A fresh look for all Five Senses
Australia’s Five Senses has been roasting beautiful specialty coffees for 20 years now. After two-plus decades, a brand refresh is certainly in order, and that’s exactly what Five Senses did. We spoke with Five Senses’ marketing director Ashley Brian to learn more.
Nick Jonas has an unsettling coffee order
Are celebrities doing okay? We all remember Daddy Pedro’s bonkers coffee order, but it turns out the youngest of the Brothers Jonas is equally bananas. Sweet Nick goes for an iced Americano with four shots of espresso, followed by a double shot, just for fun. This is neither a fun nor reasonable coffee order.
Watermelon coffee
Move over espresso and OJ, the new drink of the summer is coffee and watermelon, and the ways you can enjoy the pairing are myriad. You could, for instance, create a delicate iced coffee using a floral washed Ethiopia and combine it in exacting ratios with fresh-squeezed and ultra-filtered watermelon juice for a well-balanced, refreshing quaff. Or, you can just mash a cold brew stubby in a watermelon.
