David Lynch’s espresso machine is for sale
David Lynch passed away earlier this year at the age of 78. Lynch was a famously devout coffee lover, and it often appeared in his movies and television shows. Now, his estate is auctioning off many of his personal effects, which includes Lynch’s personal La Marzocco GS/3 espresso machine and Mazzer Mini grinder.
Slow grindin’
When it comes to grinding coffee, consistency is the name of the game. There are many ways to attack this problem, but many of them require buying a whole new grinder. CremaLoop is offering a new solution that works with most home grinder. The Slow Feeder Pro attaches to the hopper and feeds a steady flow of coffee to the burrs to help ensure a more even grind.
Coffee in Upper Manhattan
Our exploration of coffee in New York City continues this week and takes us to Upper Manhattan, defined here as everything north of 14th Street. It’s our fifth of the NYC neighborhood series and it highlights some of the smaller cafes (with a nod to the medium and larger coffee companies as well).
World of Coffee Jakarta
Perhaps the most exciting part of World of Coffee Jakarta—World Brewers Cup excluded—was the Roaster’s and Producer’s Villages. As a producing country, Indonesia brought a glimpse into coffee growing to WoC that left everyone talking. Meanwhile, at the Roaster’s Village, exceptional coffees and exciting takeovers kept attendees buzzing.

In Press Releases this week, DiFluid announced the new AirWave, a new compact smoke removal and air filtration system for roasters. Elsewhere, The Coffee Fanatic is a new book by Ryo Mikami that offers a structured deep dive into all aspects of specialty coffee. Finally, The Caffè in Oakland has recently announced a drink collaboration with Chef Jason Halverson that will be available at their Oakland coffee shop between June 2nd and 7th.
The Wayne Gross-ky
Wayne Gretzky is widely considered to be the greatest hockey player of all time. He’s Canada’s Michael Jordan and thus should not be subjected to having a truly terrible drink named after him. But that’s not how they do things up north. The Great One has unfortunately become the namesake of The Wayne Gretzky, which is a medium Tim Horton’s coffee with nine creams and nine sugars. It’s disrespectful is what it is.
Anthony Bourdain loved cheap coffee
Anthony Bourdain was long the thoughtful keeper of the cool in the culinary world. Bourdain was a fierce defender of street food and cheap beer and dive bars before it was a cool thing to do. He also loved bad coffee, and kinda hated fancy coffee. Some of his more incendiary opinions about coffee have resurfaced, and with nearly a decade in the rearview, it’s perhaps a little easier to see the kernel of truth in them.
