World’s largest leaf rust study
Coffee leaf rust has been destroying crops for over a century. Originally discovered in the 1800s, when left unchecked, leaf rust can decimate 75% of an entire crop and has now made its way to every coffee growing region on earth. In a new study, World Coffee Research teamed up with a global cohort of producers to better understand how roya affects crops in different environments and how to stop it.
Coffee may help prevent heart attacks
More good news for coffee vis a vis heart health. A recent study found that ferulic acid, a compound that occurs naturally in coffee, can keep calcium buildups from occurring, which are responsible for artery contractions that can lead to heart attacks.
Coffee in Lyon

Is this the end of the espresso martini?
The espresso martini had a moment, but mercifully, that moment may be coming to an end. One could argue that it all started with Timothée Chalamet sitting at a New York City bar enjoying the beverage with Larry David of all people. But with his latest revelation, perhaps the end is near for the espresso martini. In a recent interview, Chalamet states that his favorite cocktail is in fact a rum and coke and not the gross espresso and vodka monstrosity. Which is, objectively speaking, a far superior drink.
Anodyne votes unanimously to unionize, FairWave challenges
Earlier this month, workers at Anodyne in Milwaukee voted 37–0 in favor of forming a union. Now, FairWave Specialty Coffee Collective, the private-equity back conglomerate that own the brand, is challenging the results. A hearing with the National Labor Relations Board is scheduled for next to determine if the challenge has merit.

From the press desk this week, we learned about Linear, a new canned cold brew line from Blueprint Coffee in St. Louis. The ready-to-drink beverage comes in four flavors: Cold Brew, Oat Latte, Chai Soda, and Reviver. Meanwhile, Klatch Coffee has just announced their summer coffee lineup, featuring the return of an old favorite plus something brand new. And Italian grinder manufacturer Ceado announced a host of activities to take place at their World of Coffee Geneva booth next week.

We have two exciting new Build-Outs of Coffee this week. First up was Thesis Coffee Co in Minneapolis. Scheduled to open next month, Thesis continues the high-quality coffee tradition in one of the unheralded best scenes in the country. Meanwhile in Miami, Péché Mignon is combining a champagne bar with a coffee shop and patisserie for an all-day experience.
