The Sprudge Report - The Truth About Travel Mugs

sprudge.substack.com

Another big week in coffee. We’ll get to travel mugs in a minute, but there are some other articles we wanted to talk about first. Like Marco Dregni’s long read about community supported agriculture in coffee on Sprudge Special Projects Desk. Chemex released a new coffee brewer designed aerate and oxygenate coffee. Also, coffee doesn’t really give you energy? There’s a lot more. Let’s dig in.

Community Supported Agriculture

As part of Sprudge Special Projects, our hub for long-form journalism, writer Marco Dregni goes deep in a thought-provoking story on the CSA model as it applies to our modern coffee world, highlighting the active practices of two coffee companies as a case study.

Coffee science!

Coffee is a wonder drug and how it affects our bodies remains the topic of deep fascination for researchers the world over. This week, we reported on a few different recently published studies about everyone’s favorite beverage. One finds that maybe adding a little milk to your cuppa may not be such a bad idea. The other shows that coffee doesn’t really give you energy, just kinda borrows it from later.

Kicking into high gear

We love coffee gear here at Sprudge. This week, we looked at the history and design of the very necessary travel coffee mug. And we got a sneak peak at Chemex’s attempt to improve upon perfection with their latest brewer, the ChemAer.

Edmonton City Guide

It’s been nearly a decade since Sprudge published its first guide to coffee shops in Edmonton, Alberta, and it would be an understatement to say that a lot has changed since then. So we’re heading back to The Big E with local coffee professional and journalist Frederica Danzinger as our guide.

Anaerobic fermentation

That anaerobic fermentation is so hot right now. Anaerobic fermentation. But what is it exactly? (Do NOT call it a processing method.) It’s an at first confusing but entirely delicious topic. Luckily, our partners at Cafe Imports and Dr. Taya Brown put together a fun, informative video on what the anaerobic process is and how it fits in with other post-harvest processes.

Coffee Design: Pacific Coffee Research On The Island Of Hawaiʻi

Pacific Coffee Research (PCR) is a little company out of Hawaii doing big things with coffees grown on the Island of Hawaiʻi (also known as Hawaiʻi Island and The Big Island). Coffees from this part of the world are every bit as gorgeous and beautiful as you’ve heard, and we love the ongoing specialty coffee embrace of this historic origin.

Bouquets and bouquets

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, tea purveyor Dona is teaming up with Brownstone Botanical for a rose-themed tea cupping and bouquet making class called Tea & Flowers. Mark your calendars: February 8th at Urbana Cafe & Gallery in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood—if tickets are still available.

Results from the first USCC Qualifying Event

The 2023 US coffee competition season is in full swing with the completion of the first of two Qualifying Events. Taking place last weekend in Baltimore, Maryland, the big event seated the first half of the field for all six disciplines—Barista Championship, Brewers Cup, Coffee in Good Spirits, Cup Tasters, Latte Art, and the Roasters Championship—for the national stage of competition happening in Portland in April.
